Generation Free – Carysfort National School No Smartphone Voluntary Code

We are delighted to have  the Generation Free – Carysfort National School No Smartphone Voluntary Code in our school, an initiative developed in partnership with our Parents’ Association. This voluntary code encourages families to delay giving smartphones to their children until they have completed primary school.

Why This Matters

Research and experience tell us that early smartphone use can lead to increased anxiety, reduced attention spans, and exposure to inappropriate content. In school, we are seeing the impact of online interactions on older children, including negative social dynamics, tiredness, and difficulties concentrating in class.

By delaying smartphone use, we can protect children’s wellbeing, strengthen friendships, and support their social and emotional development during these important formative years.

A Community Effort

The success of this initiative depends on as many families as possible taking part. When children know their peers are also waiting for smartphones, it takes away the pressure to have one. Our shared vision is to make this the norm in our school community, creating a healthier and safer environment for all primary school children.

How It Works

  • The voluntary code supports our existing school policy, which prohibits the use of mobile phones and smartwatches during school hours or on school premises.

  • It is fully aligned with our Wellbeing and Anti-Bullying policies, reinforcing our commitment to a positive school environment.

  • Parents who choose to participate are helping set a collective standard that benefits every child in our community.
