Gaeilge

At Carysfort N.S., we place a strong emphasis on the teaching and learning of Gaeilge, recognising it as a living language and an important part of our cultural identity. We strive to foster a positive attitude towards Gaeilge and to create meaningful opportunities for children to use the language in real and enjoyable ways.

Our teaching follows the Primary Language Curriculum (PLC), which places equal importance on Gaeilge and English, ensuring that children develop confidence and competence in both. The PLC encourages us to focus not only on language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), but also on Gaeilge neamhfhoirmiúil – informal, everyday use of the language throughout the school day. This helps children see Gaeilge as a natural means of communication beyond the classroom.

Some of the ways we promote Gaeilge in Carysfort include:

  • Daily opportunities for Gaeilge neamhfhoirmiúil during greetings, transitions, games and classroom routines.

  • Themed events such as Seachtain na Gaeilge and school assemblies.

  • Integration of Gaeilge across the wider curriculum, particularly through song, rhyme, drama and play in the infant classes.

  • Encouraging children to enjoy books, stories and media through Gaeilge, supporting both comprehension and creativity.

We are committed to the Department of Education’s vision for language learning: to nurture children who can communicate confidently, enjoy using Gaeilge, and appreciate its role in our heritage and future.
