Carysfort National School Students
We had a very enjoyable and successful Walkathon on Friday 27th May. The children enjoyed activities including dancing, photo booth, bubbles, yoga, and of course the ice-cream van at the finish line. Well done to everyone who took part, and a HUGE thank you to the Parents’ Association for organising such a fantastic event.
Mr Heffernan’s 5th Class have been busy bees recently working on a project to raise awareness and help to protect the bee population. They managed to reach their target of collecting 300 ’Bee Cards’ from Super Valu. Here is some information about their project:
“Bees are one of the great pollinators on our planet. The contribution of bee pollination to worldwide food production is approximately 35 percent. Sadly bees are under threat in Ireland with up to 30% threatened with extinction due to decreases in natural wild flower areas, cultivated landscapes and climate change. Our project was aimed at raising awareness of the plight of bees and reminding everybody about the integral part bees play in our everyday food sources. Many thanks to everybody who helped us achieve our target.

Seachtain na Gaeilge will be celebrated in Carysfort from Wednesday 9th-Wednesday 16th March 2022.

Please join us in encouraging your child to use their ‘cúpla focal’ this week. There is a document attached with some commonly used words and phrases translated into Irish and written out phonetically to help parents to get involved.

Finally, the school will be closed on Thursday March 17th and Friday March 18th as it is a public holiday.

As part of our ongoing commitment to School Self-Evaluation and as part of our overall literacy plan we are targeting Spelling this academic year. We encourage children to work through their spelling attempts, identifying and rectifying their own errors. By targeting spelling, we are hoping to further develop word knowledge and understanding plus appropriate strategies for children to use in independent writing.
Here are two supports to help you to practice spelling with your child:

Watch 5th class planting a native Irish tree in our school grounds with their teacher Mr. Heffernan.
The tree is a Scots Pine tree. One of only three native coniferous trees in Ireland.
It can grow for up to 300 years and will likely grow up to 30 metres tall at full height.
The needles of the tree are blue/green and grow in pairs, making it easier to recognise.
The Scots pine tree is also a favourite of the native Irish red squirrel.
Planted by Mr. Heffernan’s 5th class on October 8th 2020.
Welcome to Active Week- an opportunity for us all ‘to come together while staying apart’.
We have decided to give the children a different focus next week to help maintain student engagement and to lift their spirits. The children will have a reduced amount of academic schoolwork for the week and we will be encouraging them to engage in a variety of different fun physical challenges. All our daily recommendations have been included in the weekly timetables by each class teacher.
I am delighted to inform you also that third class parents have planned a very interesting virtual walkathon around the coast of Ireland for us! The walkathon (1km per day) is included as part of your child’s Active Week timetable and each class group has been given a specific part of our scenic coastline to walk, cycle, scoot or run!
